Get credit for what you already know

Your experience matters. Through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), you may be able to earn credit for work experience, military training, certifications, and more, helping you save time and move forward faster.

Grow your career right here in Indianapolis

You don’t have to leave your job to move forward. IU Indianapolis programs are designed for working adults who want to build on their experience, gain new skills, and position themselves for the next step in their current field.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)

What is CPL?

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a process that evaluates what you’ve learned outside the classroom. If your experience meets college-level expectations, you may qualify for credit toward a degree—helping you save time and money.

How it works

  • You’ll work with your academic program to review your experience and determine how it aligns with your degree requirements. This may include submitting documentation, completing an assessment, or demonstrating your knowledge.
  • If approved, you’ll earn college credit and can move forward without repeating what you already know.

Types of experiences that may count

  • Work or professional experience
  • Employer or industry training
  • Military training or service
  • Certifications or professional licenses
  • Other structured learning outside the classroom

Resources to help you finish

Returning to school is an investment, but you don’t have to do it alone. IU Indy offers resources designed to help adult learners reduce cost and move forward with confidence.

Financial resource

Indy Achieves Completion Grant

If you’re a Marion County resident who already qualifies for state financial aid, the Indy Achieves Completion Grant may help cover remaining tuition costs. As a last-dollar scholarship, it fills the gap between your financial aid and what you still owe.

In addition to financial support, you’ll receive personalized coaching and guidance to help you stay on track and finish your degree.
